PHILOSOPHY

For me, photography is an act of listening.

It is an attempt to listen once again to the quiet dialogue that human beings have shared with nature since ancient times.

This philosophy forms the foundation of my photographic practice and is articulated as Listening as a Theory of Photography.

(Listening as a Theory of Photography)』**として、私の写真実践の基盤となっています。

Ⅰ.
Time moves in quiet continuity.
Snow returns to water, water becomes mist, and eventually dissolves into light.
Within every transformation, the boundary between life and death,
between presence and illusion, trembles faintly.

I keep my gaze upon that interval—
where the unseen gives shape to the visible,
and existence breathes through the rhythm of becoming and vanishing.

Ⅱ.
To photograph is to draw a single breath
from the ever-unfolding current of change—
to record the moment when the world briefly holds its breath
within time’s great river.

For me, photography is not the fixation of reality,
but the visualization of the reciprocal flow between time and being.

In that moment, light and shadow reveal
how life and death meet within the same continuous flow of time—
not as opposites, but as presences that arise through one another.

Within this flow, I sense a quiet breath of existence itself,
where life is born, fades, and returns—
not through repetition, but through an ever-renewing continuity.

Ⅲ.
This philosophy takes concrete form through four interconnected projects:
Reborn, Summer Fairies, Sounds of Life, and Juhyo.

Each body of work emerges from a different landscape and phenomenon,
yet all are united by a shared inquiry into time, transformation, and existence.
Rather than standing alone, these projects resonate with one another,
orming a larger structure I call The Cycle of Being.

The Cycle of Being does not conceive existence as a linear progression.
It understands life as something that continually returns while unfolding—
not through repetition,
but through transformation shaped by time, memory, and place.

When I speak of reincarnation here,
I do not mean a return to the same place or the same form.
Rather, it describes the rhythm of existence itself—
a movement in which life returns,
yet is never born in exactly the same way twice.

In time, this cycle extends beyond itself.
While carrying traces of what came before,
it gradually opens toward new landscapes,
new temporalities,
and new questions of existence.

It is this continuing expansion that I call The Tree of Being.

『Reborn』『螢火 ― Summer Fairies ―』『Sounds of Life』『Juhyo』

「The Cycle of Being(存在の循環)」という一つの構造を形づくっている。

The Cycle of Being は、

This philosophy crystallizes as The Cycle of Being,
and in time, it will branch into The Tree of Being.
From this philosophy, many stories unfold.
Each reveals a different landscape,
yet all are bound within the same breath.

この思想は「The Cycle of Being」に結晶し、

Ontology of the Work — The Conditions for Existence

What I engage with is not nature itself.

It is the event through which the world continually generates itself.

A photograph is not evidence of what once stood before the lens.

It is the trace of the conditions through which existence briefly comes into form.

The world is not a completed entity waiting to be observed.

It is always becoming—

relational,

unstable,

and continually transforming.

If this is so,

the question photography must ask also changes.

It is no longer,

"What is visible?"

but rather,

"How does the world become image?"

I pursue this question

not through abstraction,

but through the body—

remaining present within the phenomena themselves.

I do not stand outside nature.

I exist within the same field of becoming.

Light.

Wind.

Temperature.

Water.

Vibration.

Time.

And my own presence.

These are never independent variables.

Together they continually reshape the conditions from which an image may emerge.

A photograph is therefore not a record of nature.

It is the trace of a singular event of becoming—

one that could never occur in precisely the same way again.

I do not discover photographs.

Nor do I construct them.

I receive the conditions through which the world allows an image to emerge.

This position forms the foundation of my practice.

Within this field,

the distinction between photographer and subject gradually dissolves.

Nature is no longer an object to be represented.

It becomes a participant in the generation of the image.

My own body also belongs to this field.

Knowledge.

Intuition.

Anticipation.

Intervention.

Chance.

Uncertainty.

These are not opposing forces.

Together,

they shape the conditions from which the photograph comes into being.

The resulting work is not an expression imposed upon the world.

It is the trace of a moment

in which the world and I

became capable of generating an image together.

Photography, for me,

is not the fixation of reality.

It is the visualization of the reciprocal movement between time and existence.

Within that moment,

light and shadow reveal

how life and death meet

within one continuous flow.

Not as opposites,

but as presences that arise through one another.

Within this movement,

I sense the quiet breath of existence itself—

life emerging,

fading,

and returning,

not through repetition,

but through continual renewal.

What concerns me is not nature itself.

It is the conditions through which existence continually emerges.

Today,

human beings can no longer imagine themselves as standing outside nature.

Observer and world.

Matter and life.

Ecology and time.

They all belong to one relational field.

If photography is to respond faithfully to such a world,

it cannot merely record appearances.

It must engage with the processes through which appearance itself comes into being.

As long as the world continues generating itself,

my work will remain unfinished.

Each series investigates different conditions,

yet all return to the same question:

How does the world become image?

This is not a question I seek to solve.

It is a lifelong practice

of remaining attentive

to a world that is always becoming.

Photography, for me,

is an act of listening—

not to sound,

but to the emergence of being.

A photograph is the trace through which that listening quietly appears in the world.

Co-Generative Photography —  A methodological framework grounded in an ontology of becoming.

A photograph is neither made by the photographer nor by nature.
It emerges when both become conditions for each other within a shared field of becoming.
This practice unfolds through the following six phases:

Six-Phase Framework|6

1|Observation — Attuning to the Conditions

Not looking at nature as an external object,
but sensing the emergent behavior of light, wind, humidity, temperature, water, silence, terrain, and the density of time.

2|Anticipation — Reasoning the Potential

Predicting the set of conditions under which the phenomenon may turn into an image.
The image does not yet exist, yet the direction of becoming becomes intuitively perceptible.
At the same time, there is a sense that the image already exists as a latent presence somewhere in the world.
It is not about searching for a subject to photograph,
but about moving toward the place where the image could appear.
Anticipation is not an attempt to know the future,
but a sensitivity that enables arrival at the latent image.
And just as one listens for breath or for a voice emerging from silence,
anticipation allows the photographer to hear the conditions of the world before they fully take shape.
The ability to perceive before appearance is what makes the reception of the image possible.

3|Intervention — Adjusting / Responding

Introducing intention neither as domination nor as passivity,
but as the minimal and decisive involvement required to stand within the event.
Position, movement, distance, exposure, duration, rhythm — a bodily response.

4|Co-Generation — Surrendering while Staying

When the world itself begins to generate,
prediction remains active but control is released.
The crucial element is the refusal to eliminate unpredictability.
Neither accident nor calculation, but the threshold where both become inseparable.

5|Reception — The Reception of the Image

Only when phenomenon and consciousness synchronize does the act of fixation occur.
This is not “taking a picture”; it is receiving the moment in which the image comes into being.

6|Re-Reading — Post-Event Thought

We interpret afterward what the image reveals
and what conditions enabled its emergence.
Yet not all meaning is born after the fact.

The more vividly an image has been envisioned,
the more its meaning may arise simultaneously at the moment of becoming.
Even before the image exists, the direction of its emergence can be intuited,
and many images are encountered while searching the world
with that anticipated possibility already in hand.

Thus, meaning is twofold:
it emerges during the generative event and
continues to arise after the event as the work unfolds.
A finished image is never the end of generation. It is only the entrance to its continuation.

A photograph is neither made by the photographer nor by nature.
It arises at the moment when both become conditions for each other.
This practice unfolds through the following six phases:

Tracing the process of becoming — the birth of the image and the rising of meaning —
leads inevitably to a single question:

Are we truly seeing the world,
or are we merely extracting what we want to see?

Whether meaning arises at the moment of emergence
or continues to unfold after the fact,
both become possible only through a form of response
to the signals and premonitions that the world sends toward us.

At this point, photography is revealed not as observation
but as response.

I call this response — listening.
Not listening with the ears, but attuning oneself to the tremors, signs,
and latent possibilities of the world.
It is not an act of making an image,
but an attitude that allows an image to come into being.

From here, the theory of "Listening  as a Theory of Photography" begins.

2025.12.05

Although Co-Generative Photography describes how an image comes into being,
it rests upon a deeper layer — a mode of perception that makes this becoming possible.
It is the act of listening to the world before it becomes image.

Listening here does not refer merely to sound.
It means attuning to the faint signals of emergence —
to breath, to silence, to intervals, to the slightest shift in the behavior of the world.
This sensitivity allows the photographer to perceive the becoming of the image before it comes into being.

Listening as a Theory of Photography is therefore not separate from Co-Generative Photography.
it is the perceptual foundation that enables anticipation, co-generation, and reception.
Where Co-Generative Photography describes how images arise,
Listening as a Theory of Photography explores how the photographer becomes able to receive them.

Listening is not a method that follows photography.

It is the condition that makes photography possible.

This perceptual foundation is developed further in
Listening as a Theory of Photography.

(Listening as a Theory of Photography)」

STATEMENT

Artist Statement

We believe we see the world.

Yet what we truly perceive is only a small part of it.

The movement of wind through leaves.

Snow returning to water.

Mist rising from the earth.

Light drifting across a mountainside.

Life emerging, fading, and returning once again.

None of these exist independently.

Mountains nurture forests.

Forests hold water.

Water becomes rivers.

Rivers sustain life.

The world exists through relationships that are constantly forming and transforming.

I do not continue photographing in order to record beautiful moments.

I photograph to listen to the relationships through which the world continually comes into being.

Photography is not a way of explaining the world.

It is a practice of opening oneself to it.

For more than twenty-five years, I have continued walking through mountains, forests, and rivers.

Fly fishing.

Woodworking.

Photography.

These have never been separate pursuits.

They have always been one path toward understanding the world.

Knowledge gradually becomes embodied.

Embodiment gradually becomes perception.

I do not look at nature as an object.

I look toward the phenomena that emerge through its relationships.

Photography is therefore not an act of stopping time.

It is an act of entering its flow.

Photography is the act of gathering a single moment from the continuous flow of time.

It is an attempt to listen to the breath of the world, making visible the forms of life that quietly dwell within ma (間).

And perhaps, above all, it is an attempt to listen once again to the quiet dialogue that human beings have shared with nature since ancient times.

My work is built upon long-term research.

But it is equally built upon lived experience—

the time spent walking,

the knowledge carried by the body,

and a life lived alongside the land itself.

My practice is therefore both

Research-Based Practice

and

Life-Based Practice.

I did not change the way I perceive the world.

I simply exchanged a fly rod for a camera.

A note on "Ma"

Ma (間) does not simply refer to an interval of time or empty space. It describes the subtle threshold within the breath of the world where relationships, rhythms, and the forms of existence quietly emerge.

Artist Statement

Research-Based Practice

Life-Based Practice
